A 1 450 m² extension to the barrel cellar — insulated roof panels, epoxy-sealed concrete floor, and bespoke steel staircase to the mezzanine office.
What they needed
The extension had to tie into the existing Cape-Dutch architecture without disrupting the operational cellar. Temperature control was critical — the barrel-ageing environment must hold within ±2°C.
How we built it
Low-profile steel structure with 100mm PIR roof panels, parallel to the existing architectural lines. Construction proceeded in phases so the cellar stayed operational throughout.
What stands today
De Grendel increased its barrel capacity by 38%. The new space holds within 1.4°C across a full season.
